In 2025, people watched more than 35 billion hours of news content on YouTube globally, with more than 12 billion of those hours coming directly from connected TVs. At the core of this interest in news are the journalists on our platform – the established broadcasters & publishers, the independent reporters, and the next-gen news creators who are the bedrock of YouTube’s town square.
To fuel this momentum, we hosted our 14th News Working Group in New York City, bringing together over 100 top global news partners to share insights on the future of the industry. We also shared new tools to help news organizations grow and connect with their audiences. Here are three key takeaways from the Working Group:
“Fast-moving news cycles require us to make split-second editorial and packaging decisions daily. The integrations of insights and feedback will allow our digital teams to optimize our coverage performance, ensuring our reporting finds its audience.”
In fast-moving news environments, reporters and digital editorial teams need to make countless creative decisions under tight deadlines. New capabilities rolling out across YouTube Studio act as a built-in sounding board for editorial teams, from early ideation to post-publish distribution.
With enhanced Insights and Research destinations, creators can better evaluate coverage performance and identify emerging topics. When preparing a draft, Studio’s new feedback features provide actionable input on narrative flow, pacing, and storytelling structure. News organizations can also optimize packaging through dynamic thumbnails, which automatically serve the highest-performing thumbnail to different audience segments, and an upcoming video A/B testing tool allows journalists to test hooks, storytelling formats, visuals, and more.
Ask Studio can even review past coverage, suggesting refreshed thumbnails that introduce reporting to new viewers. Learn more about these latest features here.
The future of journalism requires dynamic monetization tools to fuel long-term growth. Through Channel Memberships, viewers can pay a monthly fee to support their favorite publishers in exchange for exclusive content and perks — a feature that has successfully driven over $1.5 billion in payouts to creators over the last five years.
We are enhancing Channel Memberships features to build on this success, launching a dedicated in-app hub for exclusive content, rolling out video previews so audiences can watch a snippet before becoming a member, and introducing members-only communities for journalists to interact closely with supporters.
“If someone can fake my likeness to report false news, trust is instantly questioned. YouTube has shown real leadership with these tools – which are critical for protecting our work and defending our identity at the pace the AI era requires.”
As we build AI features that help journalists with their reporting and storytelling, we’re deeply committed to protecting the trust that viewers and journalists rely on. We’re investing in tools that put creators in the driver’s seat over how their content and identity are used.
Journalists can already control their visual likeness through our Likeness Detection tool, but likeness can also be the way you sound. We’ll soon start integrating speaking voice detection with facial detection to improve overall match accuracy, laying the groundwork for broader voice protections. We'll also make Likeness Detection accessible directly in the YouTube mobile app so news creators can set up, review, and act on the go.
