Welcome to the latest installment of Release Notes!
Over the past several years, we’ve witnessed a shift in the way creators are harnessing the power of podcasts — and YouTube has emerged as the #1 destination for podcast discovery, particularly among Gen Z listeners. According to a Cumulus Report, 84% of surveyed Gen Z monthly podcast listeners in the US have discovered a podcast on YouTube. Which is why we deeply care about fostering a vibrant podcast scene that caters to everyone and anyone.
Last year, we launched podcasts in YouTube Music, an addition designed to elevate the podcast consumption experience. YouTube Music offers users the flexibility to watch and listen to their preferred podcasts without requiring a paid membership. Whether you're on a road trip or relaxing at home, the app provides seamless background play, downloads, and the unique ability to switch between audio and video formats, catering to the diverse listening preferences of our users.
YouTube's secret sauce is our recommendations. They help people discover something new or go deeper on what they love, while helping podcasters reach new audiences only found on YouTube.
We want to make YouTube Music the ultimate destination for podcasters and fans alike, so we've rolled out several new features including support for third-party RSS podcasts, updates to the Android Auto experience for easy in-car listening, enhanced download options, and customizable playlist sorting. Additionally, we've revamped our recommendation and discovery algorithms to help creators and listeners discover new content effortlessly.
I sat down with YouTube Chief Product Officer, Johanna Voolich to learn more about her passion for podcasts, the meteoric rise of podcast content we’ve seen across the platform, and what the future holds for both Creators and listeners on YouTube and YouTube Music.
