For many couples, there's a clear line between work and life — but what happens when life is part of your work? That's the question we presented to YouTube creator couple Zhong and Kat (also known as @KatrinaBuno) — a creator couple who share a combined total of more than 42 million subscribers to their challenge-based and gaming content. While both creators manage and run their own independent YouTube channels, they have a lot more than their careers in common: they often appear in each other's videos, help review each other's thumbnails, and even live together in the same home. How do they make it all work as a couple and as individual creators?
The idea to start her YouTube channel was Zhong's idea, Kat says. "He taught me everything I know." At first, Kat experimented on Shorts before moving on to longer form content and focusing on growing her own community and audience. And as Zhong's channel continued to expand, he brings Kat in where it makes sense. The resulting effect is a sweet cameo of each other on their independent channels — not forced, but genuine moments where they are in each other's lives and supporting one another.
There are also clear boundaries. Though the two say they are fairly open about sharing their relationship with the world, they also know what makes each other uncomfortable. "I hate bugs," Kat says, so definitely don't expect her to show up in any challenges involving them. Zhong, on the other hand, won't appear in anything involving roller coasters. "Jumping out of planes... that I won't do," Zhong says.
It's clear in their conversations that even as a couple, running their own channels, and working together on a few videos, both are highly collaborative and value each other as they grow in their own creator journeys. Catch the full interview below!
