Three ways creators use YouTube tools to build full-time careers

Three creators share how features like Channel Memberships, YouTube Shopping, and Shorts helped them take "the leap" and scale their brands.

There’s a moment for many creators that’s both thrilling and terrifying: “the leap.” It’s that pivotal decision to go all-in, turning a passion project into a full-time business. We recently caught up with some creators who made the jump at our YouTube Maker’s Market in Los Angeles to hear how they’ve turned their channels into thriving careers.

Creator Ms. Beanie shared her retail products and channel strategy at our recent YouTube Makers Market in Los Angeles, an open-air event celebrating creators who have transitioned their channels into thriving full-time businesses.

They open a storefront with YouTube Shopping.

When Ms. Beanie first looked into opening a YouTube Shopping storefront, she knew she couldn't use a traditional sales pitch. As an entertainment channel, she needed a strategy that felt completely organic. By using YouTube Shopping, creators can tag specific items directly in their videos and Shorts, creating an interactive storefront where viewers can click an on-screen product sticker to browse and buy without ever leaving the app.

“It's more naturally integrated," she explains. “The second I introduce a product on screen, I put that sticker. I had no idea that YouTube Shopping would work for someone like me in comedy, but it’s helped me invest into a team and really expand my channel. You never know who’s going to click, so I highly encourage others to use it.”

Caleb Marshall of The Fitness Marshall showcases the activewear brand they built directly out of their YouTube Channel Memberships community.

They build a community with Channel Memberships.

For The Fitness Marshall, making dance workout videos was always about connection. But by 2020, they were trying to figure out how to transition their passion into a full-time career and grow their business without losing the personal touch that made their channel special. Channel Memberships became that bridge, giving their most dedicated fans a way to support them monthly in exchange for exclusive perks like private live streams.

“YouTube Memberships gave us a lot more control over our content,” says Caleb. “We were able to create premium content for paying subscribers, and that changed our entire lives. It allowed us to expand our team. It allowed us to invest in ourselves and have the money to create activewear. It’s really been the driving force of our business.”

Beauty creator Magdaline Janet connected with attendees at the Makers Market, where she frequently attributes her storefront's steady audience growth to experimenting across different video formats.

They mix formats to find new fans.

Magdaline Janet uses YouTube's multi-format ecosystem to reach new audiences, constantly shifting to see what her community responds to best. She captures different viewer behaviors—using Shorts for quick discoverability and longer videos for deeper engagement—all from a single channel.

“You kind of have to see what works, what doesn't, and be able to let go,” Magdaline explains. “Sometimes you get so emotionally connected to your content, but sometimes the numbers, and what your audience wants, speaks louder.”

By leaning heavily into channel analytics, she discovered that while traditional, long-form vlogs didn't resonate with her viewers, they completely took off when she reimagined them as Shorts. “A lot of times, it is an experiment,” she says. “I base a lot of my info on the analytics and see what people like.”

These stories and more are exactly why we build tools for creators. YouTube is the only destination where you can produce all forms of content — from quick Shorts to long-form video and podcasts — while earning money from multiple revenue streams. Taking the leap is never easy, but we are proud to be the platform that helps creators build a solid foundation to land on.
