Black @ YouTube creates community and culture with Shorts

Out of our Los Angeles office, the YouTube Shorts Team hosted Mic Check Live — an R&B music showcase designed to build community and share culture.

The 2023 theme for Black History Month at YouTube was “It Takes a Village.” To fulfill that mission, Black at YouTube leads partnered with RCE LLC and the YouTube Shorts Team to host Mic Check Live — an R&B music showcase designed to build community and share culture.

Sha’Leah Nikole, who began her career songwriting and singing background vocals, and received her first placement as a writer on Nipsey Hussle’s Feelin Myself, with Grammy award winning production team 1500 or Nothin.

The event was hosted at the Google Playa Vista Office in Los Angeles with guests including members of Black at YouTube, the Black Googler Network, Black YouTube Creators and the Google LA community. Featured artists included Sha’leah Nikole, Reggie Becton and Kenyon Dixon accompanied by a live band, and was hosted by stand up comic and content creator Jazmyn W.

YouTube Shorts also hosted a fireside chat with Black Shorts Creator and Black artists on navigating the new short form media landscape as well as hosted a discussion on Shorts and Music: A Conversation on the Changing Landscape of Music in the Short-Form Media Era, featuring creators Bryce Xavier and Leah Raquel, hosted by Chelsea Reaves.
