It’s only been two months, but our Building Opportunities for Leadership and Development (BOLD) interns are already making a big impact at YouTube!
Even though it’s been over a year since we made the switch to virtual everything, work from home has been a learning process for many of us. Our interns have been rolling with the changes like champs, and they’ve been doing some pretty incredible work in the process. YouTube interns get it done!
Meet 5 brilliant YouTube BOLD interns and learn more about their projects. We’re grateful they chose to work with us this summer, so we’re celebrating their shining personalities, contributions and the energy they’ve given us. Happy #NationalInternDay!
Western University-Ivey School of Business, Class of 2022
Team: YouTube Canada B2C marketing
What are you working on?
I apply a strategic lens in understanding the competitive landscape between YouTube and other platforms leading in the industry. By the end of my internship, I'll be delivering a strategic plan on how we can strengthen our local relationships with content creators.
What advice would you give yourself on internship day one?
Set up coffee chats and tap into the extensive network that exists at YouTube/Google! I’ve been able to meet some of the smartest individuals in the company, who not only come from diverse backgrounds but work in very different teams across the organization, internationally.
What is your favorite YouTube channel?
I would love to join Vicarious Voyager on one of his first-class flight reviews. I love to travel and think it would be so cool to see the behind-the-scenes of how he films and reviews each trip!
University of Maryland, Class of 2022
Team: YouTube Music & Premium Marketing
What are you working on?
I am working on the YouTube Music & Premium team, supporting the member journey for YouTube Premium and Music subscribers. What excites me about my work is the creativeness that comes along with it, because I get to use marketing data & insights to tell a story about how members come to know about YouTube Premium and its services.
What advice would you give yourself on internship day one?
Be confident! You are here for a reason, so don't second-guess yourself, and remember that you are more than capable of being great in your role!
If you could spend the day with any YouTuber, who would you choose and what would you do together?
I would love to spend the day with Montell Fish (musician and October baby like me). I love his music, his story, and everything related, and I'd probably choose to also grab some food and have a casual chat with him and learn more about his music, his brand, and so much more.
Cornell University, Class of 2022
Team: YouTube Music & Premium Marketing
What are you working on?
I am working on improving the processes behind how the YouTube Premium marketing team tracks and prepares for upcoming product launches. It's super cool, because I end up talking to a lot of people across a variety of roles and from different walks of life; it's so invigorating to meet them and hear their story.
What advice would you give yourself on internship day one?
Build an internship tracker! Use whatever you want (I use Google spreadsheets) to track your daily/weekly tasks, goals, and accomplishments. Trust me, it'll help keep you accountable. It's also satisfying seeing all the work you've done and effort you put in at the end of the summer.
If you had a YouTube Channel what kind of content would you create?
Vlogs like Emma Chamberlain’s! I love trying random stuff/new things so it'll just be me, my friends, and a camera going on daily adventures and documenting it!
UC Berkeley, Class of 2022
Team: YouTube Editorial
What are you working on?
Stories have been a forever passion of mine. That’s why I am so excited to be exploring different forms of storytelling through my work for the YouTube Official Blog. Getting to help bring creator stories to life or showcasing the multifacetedness of our employees through the Work Diary series has been really rewarding. I even got to create my own Work Diary!
What advice would you give yourself on internship day one?
Stay organized! With so many emails and meetings every day, it’s really easy to get lost among all the things you have to do. I’ve never been a huge fan of spreadsheets, but during this internship I have fallen in love with Google Sheets. It’s been such a lifesaver.
If you could spend the day with any YouTuber, who would you choose and what would you do together?
“Adventure Time” is one of my favorite shows so I would definitely have to spend a day with Binging with Babish and recreate food from the show like Jake’s bacon pancakes.
UC Berkeley, Class of 2022
Team: YouTube Music - Artist and Industry Marketing
What are you working on?
I have always been very interested in and passionate about music, specifically helping artists build sustainable careers so that they may provide their fans (like myself) with the music that keeps us all going on a day-to-day basis. My role within YouTube Music focuses on helping the music industry better utilize YouTube advertising tools to promote their artists & new releases. Currently, I am building curriculum for an upcoming Music Insiders event that would provide our partners with a deep dive on paid promotion tools & strategies.
What advice would you give yourself on internship day one?
I would say reach out to people and be proactive about completing tasks and/or answering emails! YouTube moves quickly and there are so many great people willing to help and give advice wherever needed. It is a great environment for learning and expanding your horizons, so definitely take advantage of it!
If you could spend the day with any YouTuber, who would you choose and what would you do together?
I would spend the day with Claire Saffitz and I would have her make me her favorite cookies!
