Rene’s Top Five on YouTube: August 10, 2023 Edition

These are the top five things I saw this week.

Hi, I’m Rene Ritchie, your YouTube Creator Liaison. Basically, I help YouTube better understand creators and creators better understand YouTube. I also scour the internet every week so I can bring you the biggest and most impactful happenings on-platform and in the creator space.

Here are this week’s highlights:

🩳 Shorts has got a whole, heaping bundle of brand-new goodness coming our way this year, including Collab, where you can remix your reacts in full-on side-by-side splendor. The new Q&A sticker will let you ask your audience questions, and combined with the existing Reply with a Short feature, will help make YouTube even more conversational! If you see a Short with sounds and effects you love, you’ll be able to tap into them and easily use them on your own Short. And recomposition will let you make long-form videos into Shorts faster and better than ever. Details abound in the YouTube Blog!

🤳 One more thing! Vertical Live streaming is also coming to the Shorts feed. Creators can already stream vertically but soon, viewers will be able to discover those streams right in the Shorts feed as well. That’s going to open the door to a far broader, more casual streaming experience, mobile gamers, community building, life streaming, IRL streaming and so much more! Maybe I’ll even go (vertical) live from the Liaison channel? Deep dive my Twitter/X to get a glimpse of all the excitement!

🤔 Okay, two more things! Yes, Vertical Live will work straight from the YouTube app on mobile, but also with 3rd party tools, you can stream horizontally and vertically at the same time, but you’ll need to run them as separate, simultaneous streams (with separate chats), and watch time will count towards YouTube Partner Program eligibility as long as you archive the stream and leave it public afterwards. Basically, live is live for the creator. Vertical Live in the Shorts Feed is new and starting to roll out for viewers!

⭐️ If you’re interested in Fan Funding — and you should be! — including Channel Memberships and Supers (Chats/Stickers/Thanks), but especially case studies and monetization strategies — and you really, really should be! — there’s a whole new page for you to check out and get amped up about over on YouTube Creators!

📊 You asked for it and you’re getting it! New and returning viewers by content type in YouTube Studio Analytics! With these new metrics, you’ll be able to see how your audience is being reached and increased — and how subscriber numbers are growing — by All formats, Videos (long-form), Shorts, and Live! Check it out on Creator Insider!

I’ll be back next week, so get with the contenting!
