YouTube creators go ghost hunting: Confronting the unknown

What happens when you pair a seasoned paranormal investigator with a skeptical-but-curious fan? For Halloween, we decided to find out.

Throughout the year, YouTube makes an effort to recognize and engage communities, celebrating everything from the Roblox to tier list creators by temporarily transforming the YouTube logo with special artwork (known as a Yoodle). On October 31st, we’re celebrating the creators behind our favorite ghost stories, but this time we took things a step further…

We invited two creators, benoftheweek and kelsiidaviess, armed with cameras and a healthy dose of skepticism, to step across the threshold of an old, creepy building. Their goal: make contact with a ghost!

“Are you ready to become a believer?”

For Ben, a self-proclaimed fan who’d fallen down a “rabbit hole of disturbing paranormal content,” the experience was immediately overwhelming. It’s one thing to watch an investigation, and another to be the one holding the flashlight in a dark, mold-stained hallway.

Luckily, Ben and Kelsi were able to rely on the diverse knowledge of the ghost story community. Throughout the night, the duo received phone calls from a global cast of YouTube’s best paranormal creators. Amy from AmysCrypt shared tips on using investigative tech, Ryan and Shane from Ghost Files suggested conducting a seance, and Sam and Colby introduced them to the intense Estes Method. Each call brought a new technique and a new challenge, pushing the investigators further into the heart of the haunting.

“I feel like I would have peed my pants by now if I didn't have the tips from fellow creators.”

The ghost story community on YouTube certainly isn’t a monolith. There are the traditional storytellers, who modernize folklore by pairing their chilling narration with haunting visuals and atmospheric music. There’s fearless investigators, who venture into the world's most haunted locations, using specialized tech to test the legends and document their findings. And there are the cinematic filmmakers, who use makeup, special effects, and animation to create their own original horror narratives, turning viewers into audience members at a horror movie premiere.

This special is the ultimate expression of what the Yoodle celebrates: that across all backgrounds and styles, the age-old tradition of storytelling unites people. The thrill of the unknown, the chase for answers, and the need to share what haunts us has always brought this community together.

Did they make contact? And what was waiting for them on the other side? There’s only one way to find out.

See for yourself what they discovered. And for the bravest viewers, we’re also releasing the complete, raw footage from the lone witness camera they left behind. Watch what happened when no one was looking.
