In the last 365 days, there have been more than 15 billion views of videos related to Rubik’s Cube on YouTube.

Could you solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded? Compete in a speed-solving match? Use over 400 cubes to create a sneaker mosaic? If any of these challenges sound appealing, it might be time to consider joining the cubing community.

In its early days, YouTube’s cubing community became known for its useful tutorials, which provided step-by-step tips to solve the 3D puzzle. But over the years, as creators continued to use videos to study each other’s techniques, they began to focus more and more on finding ways to up the ante. It’s no longer a matter of lining up all the colors — it’s about completing the challenge in the most innovative way possible, and, in many cases, finding creative new uses for the iconic toy. Today, on the 50th anniversary of the cube’s invention by Ernő Rubik, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the ingenuity of the cubing community with an animated version of the YouTube logo (known as the Yoodle). We’ve also brought in Soup Timmy and Livia Kleiner to take part in a game show centered on some of the most impressive feats in YouTube cubing history, with a few special surprises mixed in.

From playing with technology-assisted solves to trying out artistic endeavors, these creators are using their videos to connect with a shared, global group of puzzle masters. To join in on the action and be inspired to try a few new techniques of your own, head to this playlist.
