Road to 1 million subscribers with Morgann Book

How she reached the million subscriber milestone in under two years

When Morgann Book started posting on YouTube in March 2021, she was mainly posting content from her part time job at Dairy Queen and also sharing content about her school and travel experiences. It didn’t feel particularly special to her but people were finding her content, connecting with her humor and authenticity, and hitting that subscribe button.

Morgann hit 100,000 subscribers in September 2021 – just six months after her first upload. After posting both long form and short form content for about a year, she went back to solely posting Shorts to give herself more time to focus on her studies. Now her content mainly centers around books, travel, school, and a splash of Dairy Queen.

Morgann hit 1,000,000 subscribers just a year and a half after starting to create content and feels grateful to have a place to share her life with the incredible audience she has built. In reflecting on her path to 1 million subscribers, Morgann has learned four key things along the way.

These days, when one of my videos has a low view count, I try to learn from it — read some of the comments, determine where viewers dropped off during the video and then move on. ”

Don’t get stressed when a video gets low views

I used to be really hard on myself if a video didn’t get a lot of views within the first day of posting it and I would immediately want to delete it. Something I wish I knew when I was first starting out on YouTube is that no one’s social media journey is going to be linear; there will always be ups and downs. These days, when one of my videos has a low view count, I try to learn from it — read some of the comments, determine where viewers dropped off during the video and then move on. There have also been some videos of mine that didn’t do so great in the beginning, but then views picked up a week later — you just never know sometimes.

Use the YouTube studio search engine tool

Recently, I’ve been using the research tab as a guide for what key words and topics I should use in the title of my videos. I also use it from time to time when I’m looking for content ideas. It’s also super helpful because it can tell you whether the search volume is high, medium or low. For example, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is high on my viewers search engines in the last 28 days, so it gives me the inspiration to create a video or two about the show or books. “Aesthetic cake” is also high within my viewers search engine so I might use the word ‘aesthetic’ in the title of a cake decorating video.

Constructive criticism isn't always fun to receive, but it can give another perspective.”

Use the comments section to your advantage

It can be an intimidating place sometimes, but you can use both positive and negative comments to your advantage. Positive ones can include video ideas or just positive reinforcements. Some rare negative ones can be useful as well. Constructive criticism isn't always fun to receive, but it can give another perspective. At the end of the day it is important to stay true to yourself and your content. Don't let silly little comments take away your creative spark.

Stay organized

I've used a variety of platforms to plan my content, but Google Calendar, Google Sheets and Notion are a few of my favorites. During the summer it was easier to wing it, but when I got busy with school it was crucial for me to know what was being posted each day. By staying organized, I can also schedule some of my posts during really busy weeks.
