YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie giving a talk at VidSummit

Rene’s Top Five on YouTube: October 5, 2023 Edition

These are the top five things I saw this week.

October! Already! Canadian Thanksgiving weekend is coming up — where those of us north of the wall beta-test the fall feasting for all our American friends — but for right now I’m sitting in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by barbeque and creators, scouring YouTube, X/Twitter, Insta-Threads and all the Slacks and Discords in between to bring you your weekly dose of everything awesome, starting with why I’m sitting in sun-baked Dallas, Texas!

🤓 It’s VidSummit time! VidSummit is a creator industry conference hosted by Derral Eves, MrBeast, and Shonduras. It focuses on channel growth, revenue growth, network growth…basically all the growth, and the speaker list never fails to impress. This year, that includes keynotes from Jimmy, Michelle Khare, Zach King, and sessions from Jenny Hoyos (who’s already captivating that Gen Alpha audience), Liron Segev (on securing your account… including from Liron during the session), Kwebbelkop (maybe…? Could have been his AI!), as well as a full-on editing roundtable hosted by the Editing Podcast.

My VidSummit session focused on What’s Next for YouTube. Everything from the new YouTube Create editing app, to upcoming AI features in YouTube studio like Music Assistant, Aloud audio dubbing, and the Inspiration tab to the hotly-anticipated Thumbnail A/B Testing. Thanks so much to the almost 300 creators who joined us live, and especially those who said hi during the event, asked questions, and shared so much invaluable feedback! The excitement, especially over AI Insights and A/B testing, was so amazing to see.

🧑‍🎓 If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a creator or if you’re just starting out, the YouTube Blog has just posted an amazing resource guide to help you find everything you need to get going and start growing. Check it out!

🎤Sarah Ali is the director of product management for Shorts, Gen AI tools, YouTube Create, and Community — Yeah, wow! — and last week I had the incredible pleasure of sitting down with her to chat about whether creators really have to use all formats, the vision for Create, how YouTube is balancing Gen AI creativity and responsibility, how Dream Screen works, and the future of all these formats and tools at YouTube. Give it a watch on Creator Insider.

(As a creator, I can’t wait for Gen AI to help me create things I never could before, faster than I ever could before… just maybe not replace me as the creator just yet, but we get to that in the interview!)

🧑‍🔬 I legit love how much YouTube CEO Neal Mohan loves spending time with creators. Even when that creator is Mark Rober, prepped for prank with an army of kid engineers lying in Nerf-launching wait. Luckily, we don’t just have to imagine what happened next, it’s up on the CrunchLabs channel.
