Cracking the code to YouTube Shorts: Part 2

Welcome to the second edition of “Cracking the code to YouTube Shorts.” Today, we’re spotlighting three trendsetting creators from APAC who are redefining what’s possible in short-form video.

Joyseo

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your channel?

I started out mainly posting dance videos, but since then, I've expanded my content to show all different sides of myself, including my daily life, beauty videos, and mukbangs!

How do you connect with your Shorts community with limited time in the content?

I’m not afraid to show my silly or unflattering sides. A signature catchphrase actually came out of this last year when I was making a lot of funny dad jokes. My community and I started joking back and forth in the comments, and I feel like it really brought us all closer together and made us feel connected.

Do you find greater success with Shorts that are part of a mini-series or Shorts that are entirely self-contained?

For me, I don't really think of it as "mini-series vs. standalone." Instead, I tend to create within a broader theme or concept (for example, my "Dad Jokes" series or my "Girlfriend" series) and release individual Shorts within that theme. That way, if one or two videos from the series go viral, it naturally encourages viewers to check out the other related videos!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your channel?

I post vlogs about my life, food and beauty reviews. My goal is to entertain my community and hopefully inspire them too.

Can you break down the anatomy of your perfect 'hook'?

A good hook should be easy to understand, quick, and packed with information! A winning combination includes eye-catching visuals, tone of voice, pace, and sound effects. One of my videos that featured this combination—a post about a soba restaurant in Japan—received 20M views on my YouTube channel!

Do you find greater success with Shorts that are part of a mini-series or Shorts that are entirely self-contained?

I’ve found greater success with mini series since they help build a loyal community. Audiences expect a certain type of content and they wait for new episodes! I also use a hashtag #IvyBeautyClass for consistency.

Sebastian Tedy

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your channel?

My channel focuses on food mukbang, challenges, and vlogs. From taking on wild challenges to exploring delicious food, we make sure there is never a dull moment.

Do you tend to follow trends when you’re creating content?

I really don’t look at the trends because if you just follow the “trend”, it means that you have nothing to differentiate yourself. What I do is usually just take anything that I deem “interesting” and package it in a way that’s authentic to me. The niche is you.

How do you create a sense of belonging and community within your audience?

I love replying to comments & seeing what the audience likes or doesn't like, so I know what my audience wants more of. It’s much better than following trends because your specific audience might not even relate to that trend.
